This is less of a feature improvement than a name change but still worth noting to save any confusion.
Check out the official link here – https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/get-started/capabilities-in-technical-preview-1802#improvements-to-pxe-enabled-distribution-points
The feature here is to PXE boot without using WDS which traditionally was the backbone of all SCCM PXE booting for running task sequences.
Microsoft introduced this in tech preview 1706 as “PXE network boot support for IPv6 – https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/get-started/capabilities-in-technical-preview-1706#pxe-network-boot-support-for-ipv6
This also uses functionality developed for the Client-based PXE responder service in tech preview 1712 – https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/get-started/capabilities-in-technical-preview-1712#client-based-pxe-responder-service
Confused? Try it out and watch for the caveats noted with existing WDS installations. This is an ideal solution for working with PXE services in small locations where you can’t justify a full distribution point.
